ARTISTS RESPONSES TO THE SPACE.

The concept was to have artists creating in the space during the exhibition. A few brave souls took up the challenge and here are the results:

Painted stones and Polaroid photo of painted stones.

Stone decorating proved very popular.

THE DAY OF THE EXHIBITION.

Exhibition Day
Ominous dark clouds loomed as exhibition day dawns. Is it necessary to put the larger marquee up to provide some shelter, or is the weather forecast of light cloud to be relied on? Public outcomes are not for the faint of heart, so a decision to stick with the planned layout is taken.
Time is a constant, unless of course it is limited, when it disappears at an alarming rate. Cutting it incredibly fine, I'm ready to face my viewers.

Final arrangement. Really pleased with the white display unit.

Shadows

My primary aim was to celebrate me as an artist by exhibiting my work, along with encouraging fellow artists to respond to the space. Perhaps not as many artists as I had hoped, but certainly enough  to make it a success. The stone decorating, an activity I had invisaged as being for children was a great success with the adults. The 'stone' table became quite a social hub!

I have varnished all the stones and have placed them in my garden.

Jess took a Polaroid photo of the dancer and left it next to it.

Reflections

REFLECTED VIEW

Installing prints in the summer house.

Thinking of installing my prints in the summer house at the end of the garden.
The forecast looks dry if not sunny, so I feel this would be an ideal place to display them.

INSTALLATION CONTEMPLATION CONTINUED

How to install?

Such a beautiful day for experimenting with how to install my work for my exhibition next Saturday.
Several questions arose during my contemplations which will no doubt influence how I present my work for next Saturdays open day. The weather is obviously crucial. Alternative plans will need to be in place for wet, or perhaps more importantly windy conditions. The forecast at present is dry but cloudy. We can but hope!

How much of a gallery do I create? My initial aim was to present my work in the space that inspired it, namely in the environment of my garden. The words of Robert Smithson being key to this.

“A work of art when placed in a gallery loses its charge and becomes a portable object disengaged from the outside world” Smithson R (1972)
Visiting gallery based exhibitions, along with presenting my work for assessment has created misgivings about this. My work looked really effective against the white college walls, therefor do I try and recreate a mini gallery area within the garden, or stick with my original aim and place the pieces against the more natural backdrop of my garden? With my husbands assistance, I have attempted to create a white display unit for the smaller pieces, so that their effectiveness is not lost. Hence the need for experimentation.
I am still hoping that I will have some artists responding to the space both on the day itself and subsequently. How will this work?
I would like an art activity to take place during the afternoon, but am conscious of putting too many demands on my time when my primary aim should be discussing my art.
Refreshments? I have a tea urn organised.
Titles- consider more open titles as they are more thought provoking.
Definitely need the blurb to explain the concept behind the work as a whole, but do I explain individual pieces or leave it to the viewer to interpret?
Do I draw up a location plan for the work?
Unless really wet I have decided to locate the prints on the wall of the gazebo which is situated at the very end of the garden.

Effective, but not practical due to health and safety.

Health and safety issues need considering. Hanging the pieces from trees looks effective but, I have decided against this due to possible issues.

This arrangement doesn't work. Important that the pieces relate ascetically.
 Wind will be a consideration!

I do think the pieces look better against the white even it the structure is not perfect. I am going to experiment with adding sides.
Must make sure this fence panel is secure.
' DO NOT CLIMB' sign.
Use of the back of the structure.

Still contemplating.

Simplifying things.
Less is more.
